They Hurt His Pregnant Wife, But He Arrived With Proof

The monitor answered with its steady pulse.

Dr. Sayeed came in to check the lines. She said Liora was stable but fragile. She said the next twenty-four hours mattered. She said grief would have to wait until survival was no longer in question.

Elias understood. He did not accept it.

At 11:17 a.m., Agent Kline entered the room.

“We accessed the drive,” she said.

Elias stood.

She glanced at Liora, then lowered her voice. “Your wife copied files from a Mercer internal server. Contracts, scanned signatures, shell company records. There are references to a trust being created in the unborn child’s name.”

Elias felt the words settle slowly.

“Why would Silas create a trust for a child he didn’t want?”

“He didn’t create it for the child. He planned to use it as a clean holding structure. A family trust connected to a minor can hide ownership layers if nobody questions the paperwork closely enough. Your wife appears to have found documents connecting that trust to illegal port contracts and bribery payments.”

Elias looked at Liora.

“She knew.”

“She knew enough to copy the files.”

The door opened again. Dr. Sayeed stepped in, followed by a nurse. Her face was cautious, but there was something new in it.

“Major,” she said, “your wife is waking up.”

The world narrowed to the bed.

Liora’s lashes trembled. Her mouth moved once without sound. Elias leaned close, careful not to touch anything that might hurt her.

“Liora,” he whispered. “It’s me.”

Her eyes opened halfway. They were unfocused at first, then frightened, then suddenly full of him.

Tears slipped sideways into her hair.

“The baby,” she breathed.

Elias’s throat closed.

He had imagined this moment on the plane. He had tried to prepare words strong enough to hold both of them. There were none.

He bent his head until his forehead rested near her shoulder.

“I’m so sorry.”

Her face crumpled without sound. Her bandaged hands twitched as if she wanted to cover her belly and could not.

“He kicked,” she whispered. “When I was in the car. Before I went in. He kicked.”

“I know.”

“I tried to protect him.”

“I know.”

“No.” Her eyes sharpened through the pain. “You need to know all of it.”

Dr. Sayeed stepped forward. “Liora, you need rest.”

Liora shook her head faintly. “They’ll say I fell.”

“They already did,” Elias said.

Her eyes filled with terror. “My father?”

“He’s here.”

Her breathing changed. Fast, shallow.

Elias leaned closer. “He cannot move you. He cannot come in. Maribel is safe. She gave us the drive.”

Liora closed her eyes, and for the first time since Elias had arrived, relief passed over her face.

“He was going to use our son,” she whispered. “Not because he loved him. Because no regulator would look too hard at a grieving grandfather’s trust.”

Agent Kline moved closer. “Liora, can you tell us who hurt you?”

The room held its breath.

Liora opened her eyes.

“My father ordered the doors locked,” she said. “Graham hit me first. Nolan took my phone. Pierce held my shoulders. The others blocked the exits.”

Her voice broke.

“Miles told them to stop.”

Elias remembered the youngest brother’s glance in the hallway.

“What happened then?” Agent Kline asked.

Liora stared at the ceiling. “My father said
