She Texted the Wrong Number, Then Learned Who Her Father Was

around a mug of tea she did not drink. Adrian stood near the door, keeping distance like a promise. Maya sat across from her mother. Lily slept on the mattress, one hand tucked under her cheek.

‘Is he my father?’ Maya asked.

Elena’s mouth trembled.

‘Yes.’

One word.

Thirteen years of silence collapsed under it.

Maya stared at Adrian. His eyes were wet, but he did not reach for her. Somehow that made it worse.

‘Did you know?’ she asked him.

‘No,’ Adrian said. ‘I was told your mother left the city. I was told she wanted nothing from me. Later, I was told she had married someone else.’

Elena laughed once, bitter and soft.

‘By your mother.’

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

‘By my mother, yes.’

Maya knew the name from television, though she had never connected it to the man in her kitchen. Vivian Vale. Museums. charity dinners. pearl necklaces. A woman rich people called generous because she gave money in rooms full of cameras.

Elena looked at Maya.

‘I was twenty-two when I met your father. He was kind to me. Kinder than anyone in his family wanted him to be.’

Adrian lowered his eyes.

‘We were engaged.’

Maya’s fingers curled under the table.

‘Engaged?’

Elena nodded.

‘When his mother found out I was pregnant, she said I had trapped him. She offered me money to disappear. I refused. Then she threatened my mother’s immigration case, my job, my apartment. She had lawyers call me. She had people follow me. And then one day, Adrian stopped answering.’

Adrian lifted his head.

‘I was in London after my father’s stroke. My phone disappeared. My emails were redirected through my assistant. I believed Elena was refusing to speak to me.’

‘And you just believed that?’ Maya asked.

The question hit him hard. He did not defend himself.

‘I was weak,’ he said. ‘And young. And used to my family arranging the world around me. I looked, but not hard enough. I have paid for that every day since.’

Elena’s voice shook. ‘After Maya was born, Vivian came to the hospital. She held out papers and said if I signed, you would never bother us. If I didn’t, she would bury me in court and take my baby.’

Maya felt the room go cold.

‘Take me?’

Elena reached across the table, but Maya pulled back.

‘I ran,’ Elena whispered. ‘I changed clinics, changed jobs, changed apartments. I thought keeping you away from them was the only way to keep you mine.’

Maya wanted to be angry at one person. Her mother for hiding. Adrian for not finding them. Vivian Vale for turning a baby into a threat. But anger did not know where to land. It spun inside her, hot and helpless.

‘Why are we starving then?’ she asked Adrian.

Elena flinched.

Maya hated herself for saying it, but the words had already left.

Adrian’s face tightened with pain.

‘Because I failed you.’

The answer was too simple and too late.

A knock sounded at the door.

Elena stood quickly.

‘Do not open it.’

Adrian moved first and looked through the peephole. His shoulders went rigid.

‘It’s my mother.’

Elena grabbed Lily from the mattress. Maya stood, heart pounding.

The knock came again, firmer.

‘Adrian,’ a woman’s voice called from the hallway.
