She Found Caleb’s Backpack Hidden Inside The Mountain

the front of the house.

Heavy. Calm. Familiar.

Then Sheriff Pike’s voice came through the wood.

Emma, I know you went up to Black Hollow today.

Emma did not move.

The doorknob turned once.

Locked.

Pike’s voice lowered.

And I know what you brought back.

Helen grabbed Emma’s wrist. Laundry room. Crawl space. Now.

But Emma was looking at Caleb’s note again. In the chaos, she had missed one final line written inside the fold in faded ink.

Em-Bear, if Pike comes before you find me, run to the place where we buried the red lunchbox.

Her breath caught.

She knew that place.

Behind the old maple tree, beneath the loose stone wall, Caleb had buried a red lunchbox when they were children. It had been their secret vault, filled with bottle caps, a broken slingshot, and notes written in code.

Glass shattered at the back of the house.

Helen screamed.

Emma grabbed the rusted key, the list, the birth certificate, and Caleb’s red bear keychain. She shoved them into her jacket. Then she pulled her mother toward the basement door.

For years, Emma had thought the mountain had taken her brother.

Now she knew the mountain had hidden the first doorway.

The second was buried in her own backyard.

And somewhere beyond it, if Caleb’s message was true, her brother was still alive, still waiting for someone to speak the code word he trusted only one person to remember.

Emma climbed through the basement window into the snow with her mother behind her and Pike’s footsteps crossing the kitchen above.

At the old stone wall, she dropped to her knees and dug with both hands until her fingers struck metal.

The red lunchbox was still there.

Inside was a burner phone wrapped in plastic, a photograph of Caleb as a grown man, and a note with only six words.

Emma pressed the phone to her chest as headlights appeared at the end of the alley.

Then the screen lit by itself.

An incoming call.

Unknown number.

She answered with shaking hands.

For one breath, there was only static.

Then a man’s voice said the nickname no one had used since the day Caleb vanished.

Em-Bear.

Emma closed her eyes as the world broke open.

But before she could say his name, Caleb whispered, Do exactly what I say, because Pike is not the last one, and the person who gave him the order is standing much closer than you think…
