could bang on until you opened it. Sometimes it was a window you unlocked from the inside when the air finally felt safe.

I put the phone back in my pocket and touched the lilacs with my fingertips.

Then I walked home to my small apartment above the florist, where my textbooks waited on the table and my own key opened my own door.

That evening, I taped my grandmother’s photograph beside my desk. Under it, I wrote one sentence on a scrap of paper.

And for the first time in my life, I believed it.
