away until afternoon.
Then Linda said something I would never forget.
‘By the time she understands, it will be done. People like Maya forgive because they are afraid of becoming hard.’
I almost made a sound.
Daniel saw my face and quietly took my hand, not romantically, not dramatically, just to anchor me to the room.
‘Not tonight,’ he whispered. ‘Tonight you stay smart.’
After the recording, we moved fast.
Daniel used his laptop to send copies to my email, Nina’s email, and a secure storage account. I texted Nina first, then my father, then Marcus. I did not explain everything. I wrote only enough to make them come.
Emergency. Come to Linda’s house by 7 a.m. Do not call Ethan. Do not warn anyone. Bring Dad. Bring your phone.
My father replied with one word.
Coming.
That word saved me.
Before dawn, Daniel found the folder Linda had hidden in a sideboard drawer. Inside was the property transfer document, already prepared with my full legal name. There were sticky notes marking where I should sign.
One note was written in Ethan’s handwriting.
Tell her taxes and marriage filing.
I stared at it until the letters blurred.
Daniel took photos of every page, then placed the folder exactly where he had found it.
We did not sleep.
At six-thirty, I washed my face, brushed my hair, and put on the pale blue dress I had packed for our first morning as husband and wife. My hands shook while buttoning it, but when I looked in the mirror, I did not see prey anymore.
I saw someone who had finally understood the room she was standing in.
At 6:52, Daniel unlocked the side entrance.
My father arrived first. He did not speak when he saw me. He only pulled me into his arms so tightly that the rest of the world disappeared for a moment.
Nina came next, her eyes red and furious. Marcus followed, already recording on his phone because he understood before anyone told him.
Daniel led them into the living room. We placed the printed copies of the document on the coffee table. My phone sat connected to a small speaker Daniel had found in his room.
At 7:18, footsteps sounded above us.
Ethan laughed softly at something Linda said.
The sound made my stomach turn.
They came downstairs smiling.
Ethan saw me first. Then my father. Then Nina. Then Marcus. Then Daniel standing beside the speaker.
The smile vanished from his face like someone had wiped it away.
Linda stopped behind him on the staircase.
‘What is this?’ she asked.
Nobody answered.
I pressed play.
Ethan’s own voice filled the room.
‘Finally, she is in my trap. Now we start executing our plan.’
The silence afterward was almost beautiful.
Ethan looked at me, and for one pathetic second, he tried to become the man from the wedding again. His eyes softened. His mouth trembled. He took one step forward.
‘Maya,’ he said. ‘Sweetheart, you do not understand.’
I lifted my hand.
‘Do not call me that.’
Linda moved fast then, descending the stairs with her chin high. ‘Recording people in their private home is disgusting. This family invited you in with love.’
Daniel stepped forward.
‘No, Mom,’ he said. ‘You invited her in to steal from her.’
