mother’s grave and read her letter at last.
My dear stubborn son,
If you are reading this, you have been hurt by people you loved or people you paid too well. Possibly both. I am sorry for the pain. I am less sorry for the lesson. You always did need thunder before you noticed rain.
Trust Ada. Apologize to Claire. Do not confuse being obeyed with being loved. And when the house is yours again, make it useful.
Malcolm laughed once, and then the laugh broke into tears.
Claire slipped her hand into his.
They stood there until the light began to fade, father and daughter, no longer separated by lies.
When they returned home, Ada had left soup warming on the stove and three bowls on the kitchen table.

Malcolm paused in the doorway and looked at the small, ordinary scene: the steam rising, the brass key on its blue ribbon hanging from a hook by the pantry, Claire taking off her coat, Ada pretending not to watch them with wet eyes.
For the first time in nearly a year, the house did not feel like something waiting to be taken.
It felt like something being given back.
