For once, there was no emergency in her hands.

She touched her son’s cheek.

Outside, the rosemary moved in the wind her father used to call weather for brave people.

Clara had once thought survival meant staying calm while someone else held the room hostage. Now she understood it differently.

Sometimes survival was a woman standing under chandeliers, refusing to cry on command.

Sometimes it was a folder photographed in secret.

Sometimes it was a locked house opened again, window by window, until the air changed.

Baby Samuel stirred, then settled.

Clara kissed the top of his head and watched the sunrise brighten the green shutters.

“We’re home,” she whispered.
