On the wall behind us hung a framed copy of one recipe from her old book. Not the secret measurements. Not the part worth money. Just the title in her handwriting: Sunday Orange Rolls.

The words were slightly crooked.

Mom looked at it for a long time.

I shook my head because I felt tears coming, and I was tired of crying in rooms where other people made records of it.

‘You’re my mother,’ I said.

She lifted her hand with effort and touched my cheek.

‘Still,’ she whispered.

Outside, people were beginning to line up. Inside, the ovens hummed. For the first time in almost a year, I did not feel like I was waiting for the next letter, the next accusation, the next performance.

Derek had wanted an audience for my humiliation.

Instead, he gave my mother’s truth a room full of witnesses.

And when I unlocked the bakery door that morning, Mom stood beside me, small but steady, as the first customers stepped into the warm light.
