He Married His Mistress at Midnight, Then I Found the Stolen Folder

closing.

When Maren spoke again, her voice was lower.

“He told me you were divorced.”

Nora stared at the empty drawer.

“He lied to both of us.”

In the background, Julian’s voice called, “Maren? Who is that?”

Maren did not answer him.

Instead, she whispered, “Nora, I signed something yesterday.”

Nora’s grip tightened on the phone.

“What did you sign?”

“A witness statement. He said it was for an investor package. He said you were unstable and refusing to release marital assets out of spite. He told me it was just to confirm he had been separated for over a year.”

Nora’s stomach hardened.

“Did you read it?”

A pause.

That pause said enough.

“Not carefully,” Maren admitted. “There were a lot of pages. Julian said the lawyer had already reviewed everything.”

“What lawyer?”

“A man named Caleb. He was at dinner. Dark hair. Navy suit. He had a blue folder.”

The reflected man.

Nora wrote the name down.

Behind Maren, Julian’s voice grew sharper. “Who are you talking to?”

Maren inhaled shakily.

“He is coming.”

“Maren,” Nora said, “put me on speaker.”

“What?”

“Put me on speaker and set the phone down.”

There was a fumbling sound. Then Julian’s voice became clear.

“Give me the phone.”

Maren said, “Did you steal her documents?”

The silence on the other end was small, but it was enough.

“You do not understand what is happening,” Julian said. His tone had changed completely. The golden charm was gone. Underneath it was something flat and hard. “Nora has controlled me financially for years. She is punishing me because I found happiness.”

Nora leaned back in her chair.

“Good morning, Julian.”

Another silence.

Then a laugh, short and ugly.

“Of course you called her.”

“Actually,” Nora said, “I called the room. She answered.”

“You always have to manage the room, don’t you? Even now.”

“Where is the folder?”

“What folder?”

Maren spoke before Nora could. “Julian.”

His voice sharpened. “Stay out of this.”

Nora heard the shift. The small reveal. Maren heard it too.

Control had been easy for Julian when both women were separated by his stories. It became harder when they listened to each other.

“The trust office already has your submission,” Nora said. “They preserved the records. The bank has the transfer attempts. Evelyn has the hallway video. Keep talking only if you want to help me.”

Julian’s breathing changed.

“You put a camera inside our home?”

“Our home?”

“Do not start that.”

“You mean the condo you just texted me about negotiating for after marrying another woman?”

Maren made a small sound.

Julian lowered his voice. “Nora, listen to me. This got emotional. I sent the message badly. But the trust money was always supposed to help launch the hotel. You knew that.”

“No,” Nora said. “You hoped that.”

“I gave eight years to this marriage.”

“You gave eight years to proximity. There is a difference.”

His charm flickered back, desperate now. “We can fix this privately. You hate scandal. Think about your reputation. Think about your mother.”

At that, something in Nora went perfectly still.

For years, Julian had used her mother’s name as a soft weapon. Lillian would want you to be generous. Lillian would want you to believe in me. Lillian would not have raised you to be
