gray.
Celeste looked from Mara to Adrian.
‘You said my money secured the house.’
Mara paused.
Adrian’s head snapped toward Celeste.
‘Do not,’ he said.
But Celeste was staring at him as if seeing a stranger crawl out from inside a familiar suit.
‘You told me to wire the funds to your private account because the bank needed speed.’
The senior officer wrote something down.
Vivienne whispered, ‘Adrian.’
Celeste stood. Her hands trembled, but not with delicacy now. With rage.
‘I gave you one point eight million dollars.’
Adrian stepped toward her. ‘Celeste, this is not the time.’
An officer moved between them.
‘Stay where you are, sir.’
Mara called Claire from the foyer.
At the hospital, Claire listened with the phone on speaker. Miles slept in the crook of her arm. Lily’s face rested beneath her chin. Elena, the nurse, stood near the door pretending not to listen and failing.
Claire heard Celeste crying. She heard Vivienne demand a lawyer. She heard Adrian call the order harassment, then personal revenge, then confusion.
And beneath all of it, Claire heard the collapse of a world that had stood on her silence.
‘Claire,’ Mara said at last, her voice lower. ‘There is more.’
Claire closed her eyes.
‘Tell me.’
‘The guardianship paper is worse than we thought. The signature page was notarized yesterday.’
‘But I never signed it.’
‘I know. The notary stamp belongs to someone at Adrian’s firm. We are notifying the court and hospital security now.’
As Mara spoke, Elena turned sharply toward the hallway.
A man in a dark coat stood beyond the glass near the nursery entrance. Claire recognized him as Adrian’s driver, Tomas. Beside him was a woman wearing a nurse’s coat too large at the shoulders. She held a folded blanket.
Elena’s face changed.
‘Stay here,’ she said.
Claire’s heart began to hammer.
‘That is my husband’s driver.’
Elena hit the wall button near the bed.
The corridor alarm did not scream. It pulsed softly, a controlled chime that made three staff members look up at once.
Tomas saw them looking. He turned and walked away too quickly.
The woman in the nurse’s coat dropped the blanket on a chair and followed.
Security stopped them before the elevator.
Neither had touched the babies. But in Tomas’s coat pocket, security found a copy of the forged guardianship form and a discharge request naming Miles Marlow.
Claire did not remember standing. One moment she was in bed, the next she was at the nursery glass, one hand pressed against the cold pane, watching a guard take the papers away.
Elena touched her shoulder.
‘Your babies are safe.’
Claire looked at Miles. Then at Lily.
‘They were never going to take both,’ she whispered.
That was what finally broke her.
Not the mistress. Not the proposal. Not the house. Not even the forged signature.
It was the certainty that Adrian had looked at two newborns and chosen which one had value.
By noon, Mara had filed for an emergency protective custody order. By evening, Adrian was prohibited from removing either child from the hospital or contacting Claire outside counsel. The forged papers were turned over to investigators. Celeste gave a statement about the wire transfer. Vivienne gave no statement at all, which was the first wise thing she
