Mara read it twice.
Then she set the phone face down.
Elias made a small sound, and Mara lifted him from the stroller. He tucked his head beneath her chin as though he had always known the safest place to rest.
Across the street, the hospital windows reflected the morning light. Somewhere inside that building, another woman was becoming a mother, terrified and brave and unaware of what she could survive.
Mara kissed her son’s forehead.
