“I would have crossed any distance,” I said.

She nodded, eyes shining.

“I know that now.”

Then she reached for my hand.

Her fingers were warmer than they had been in Room 214.

I held on all the way across the parking lot, past the place where my keys had fallen the night the phone rang, past the door I had locked before my life split open, and into a future Pierce Bellamy had counted on stealing but never got to touch.
